Putting together your outfits for an engagement session can seem stressful at first thought, but it’s really not too hard if you break it down! Here are some of my favorite tips in putting together great outfits that look perfect together and make for the best engagement photos.
1. Coordinate, but don’t match
Should your outfits look good together? For sure – but that doesn’t mean you should both be in denim jeans and white button ups. Leave the matchy-matchy at home and pick outfits that coordinate. Even better, choose a color palette so you don’t feel limited, but your outfits still look bomb together.
Some of my favorites are:
- Chambray + blush + olive
- Mustard + olive + burgandy
- Emerald + navy
- Navy + grey
- Red + grey
- Rust + oatmeal
2. Be bold
People are often scared to do patterns, but it can totally be done. Just make sure both of you aren’t incorporating patterns, and you’ll be fine. Also, large print patterns tend to photograph better than teeny tiny prints, and you’ll want to make sure it’s not too overwhelming or distracting.
If you’re not sure how to make patterns work, opting for a patterned accessory, like a scarf, is an easy but chic choice.
3. Skip big graphics, words, and baseball caps
You can keep it super casual, but keep in mind these are photos where you want to uplevel your game a little bit 😉 large graphics or words (like brand names) can be really distracting, and baseball caps are just plain difficult to photograph around without getting awkward shadows.
If you want to keep it more casual, I always love plaid or flannel shirts for guys and simple white dresses or tops for ladies. It’s simple and easy, but also classic.
4. Be comfortable
The cutest outfit in the world doesn’t matter if you don’t feel comfortable in it. Believe me, it will show in your photos! Also keep in mind, ladies, that if you wear something super low cut, or super short, it drastically limits how I can pose you, which is going to make your gallery smaller. And we all want MORE options, right!?
Bonus Tips
- Your engagement session is a great time for some ring shots, so make sure it is clean beforehand!
- Your hands will be the focus of at least a few photos, so splurge for a manicure, or take some time to do your own polish – whether it’s French tips or a fun color.
- Check Pinterest! There are so many great ideas and outfits that other people have pinned, and they’re great to use for inspiration.
- Think about other elements to your photos. I love shooting with props like coffee mugs or quilts, and one of my all-time favorite shots even involved a canoe! I’m always up for an adventure.
